The Moon (Al-Qamar)
Verses 18-22 GROUP_1418 54.18-22
18
كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
The people of ‘Ad too rejected the truth. How terrible was My punishment and My warning.
19
إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِي يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ مُّسْتَمِرٍّ
We sent a raging wind against them on a day of continuous calamity.
20
تَنزِعُ النَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ مُّنقَعِرٍ
It swept people away as if they were trunks of uprooted palm trees.
21
فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
How [dreadful] was My punishment and My warning!
22
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ
We have made it easy to learn lessons from the Quran: is there anyone who would receive admonition?

Commentary
(a) The people of ‘Ad merited divine retribution, so God unleashed a hurricane which made it difficult for them to remain upright. The winds lifted them and tossed them about violently and waves dashed them against the trees. Others were crushed when their roofs fell down on their heads. All this was a demonstration of the fact that man was absolutely helpless, and that he had no power or authority of any sort before God.
